Best Chaweng Hotels

This lovely little boutique resort on the southern end of Chaweng Beach has only private bungalows, all of which are decorated with traditional Thai furnishings but have plenty of modern amenities including flat screen televisions and DVD players. Grounds are lush and well kept, as is the small patch of beach in front of the resort. Poppies is small (just 24 bungalows), so expect personalized attention and service.

If you like the predictability and amenities of large resorts, Centara Grand Samui is a great choice in Chaweng. This large resort on Chaweng beach offers visitors everything from clean, well-furnished rooms to a massive swimming pool, two tennis courts and a fitness center. The central Chaweng location makes the resort very convenient for going out, too, if you choose to venture out of the compound.

This funky property on the main drag off of Chaweng Beach is a top choice for those looking for an inexpensive place to stay without sacrificing style. The hodgepodge of colorful rooms are all different but each are comfortable and have amenities such as air conditioning, TVs with a free DVD library and Wi-Fi. You don't get breakfast with the room, but the downstairs cafe has such good food you won't mind paying for it.

• Price: From 800 Baht ($25) for double.

This smaller resort on Chaweng offers traditional Thai style design and service on a beautiful stretch of beach on the southern end of Chaweng. Le Paradise offers two types of rooms -- traditional and modern. Both are spacious but the modern rooms are more generic looking. The resort doesn't have the same level of amenities as some of the larger ones in the area but there are restaurants, a swimming pool and a spa available.

This colorful, funky property a short walk from the beach is a great choice for visitors who want something a little out of the ordinary but don't want to sacrifice comfort. There's a spa and small swimming pool on the property and the rooms are spacious and the design, a mix of natural materials and tropical colors, very interesting!
