Motorcycle taxis? If you're not used to them, the idea might sound crazy, but in Bangkok, and throughout Thailand, motorcycles are used as taxis. Strap on a helmet and hop on. If you're going on a short ride in the city they're often the fastest way to get around.
  • Bangkok motorcycle taxis are part of the informal public transportation system and are the best way to go short distances in traffic.
  • You can flag down a motorcycle taxi on the street or you can head to one of the hundreds of motorcycle taxi stops throughout the city. You'll know you've found one if there's a big line of drivers in brightly colored vests, often orange, on their motorcycles.
  • Motorcycle taxis are used for short distances, typically within a neighborhood.
  • Prices from one point to another are always fixed but make sure to ask for the price before you get on.
  • If you're going to ride on the back of a motorcycle, demand a helmet! They're rarely offered but should be worn at all times.
  • Always get on the bike from the left side to avoid getting burned by the exhaust pipe.
  • If you're wearing a skirt, you can do as many women in Bangkok do and ride side-saddle. Sound scary? It is. Better to be wearing pants or shorts!
