The biggest hold up at Suvarnabumi is often getting through immigration. It can take up to 45 minutes to wait in line and have your passport processed so plan accordingly. Make sure you fill in your departure card (stapled to your passport when you arrived) before you get up to the immigration counter or you may be sent back to the end of the line.
Bangkok's airport has ample food and beverage outlets, including Burger King, Starbucks and other fast food as well as some sit-down restaurants.
The airport has one of the highest concentrations of duty free and other shopping by square foot of any airport in the world. There are Boots drugstores, Jim Thompson shops, electronics shops and high-end international designer stores as well.
There are limited waiting areas outside of the gates. If you are looking for a comfortable place to sit down head to the areas on the extreme ends of the terminal where couches and chairs have been set up. There is also a pay lounge at the airport. For 1,000 baht, you can use the lounge, which includes free food and drinks, and sitting area, while waiting for your flight.
There is a Novotel on the airport grounds and it's a short shuttle ride from the terminal. There are also scores of inexpensive hotels just outside of the airport. Almost all offer free pick up and drop off service for guests on long layovers.
There are no ATMs once you pass through immigration, so if you need to have Thai currency, you must withdraw it in the outer part of the airport.
