Karon Beach

By , About.com Guide

Though Phuket’s Karon Beach gets less hype than neighboring Patong Beach, many visitors consider it one of Phuket’s best vacation spots. Karon has soft sand, clear water and plenty of places to lounge out in the sun. Because it’s so big (nearly two miles across), it never feels overcrowded, even during high season. There are plenty of places to stay and things to do when you’re not at the beach but it’s a lot quieter and less built up than bustling Patong Beach. If you want to enjoy Patong’s nightlife scene or shopping, though, you’re just a couple of miles away.

Getting Around Karon:

Karon beach is one of the widest on the island The beach and surrounding area are big enough that you might not want to walk from place to place. Rent a scooter or take one of the many mini-buses that ply the streets to get from your hotel to the beach or shopping. If you head out to Patong you'll need to take a tuk tuk or taxi, which will cost around 200 baht for the trip.

Getting to Karon:

Karon Beach is on the west coast of Phuket just south of Patong Beach and if you're coming from the airport you can either take a taxi for about 350 baht or get on the island's equivalent of a share-the-ride van for about 150 baht. There are no public buses directly from the airport to the beach, but if you don't mind switching, take the public bus from the airport to the bus terminal in Phuket Town, then switch to a bus heading for Karon.

Where to Stay:

Karon has a good selection of resorts, hotels and guest houses catering to all budgets.

What to Expect:

Karon Beach is a sweeping, long stretch of soft sandy beach backed by a large village which has plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. It isn't as loud or bustling as Patong Beach but the bars in the center of Karon Village can get noisy at night.
