The Jim Thompson House is a pleasant, lovely museum near the Siam Square shopping area. It was once home to American Jim Thompson, former architect turned OSS agent turned… Thai textile manufacturer. Learn more about his interesting life and mysterious death while touring his old residence, six traditional teak houses he brought to Bangkok piece by piece from different parts of the country and located on the edge of the San Saeb canal. You’ll also get a glimpse of what Bangkok was like fifty years ago and how Thai silk is manufactured.
Services:
Jim Thompson (the company) still manufactures Thai silk and some of the nicest (though a little pricey) souvenirs and there is a retail shop on the museum’s grounds. There is also a café serving both Thai and western food. Though the museum tends to attract the “ladies who lunch” crowd, even those uninterested in shopping and sipping tea will enjoy it.
How to Get There:
Take the Skytrain to National Stadium or the canal ferry to the Jim Thompson House.
How to Visit:
The museum requires visitors to take a short compulsory tour before exploring any exhibits on their own.
Hours:
Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission:
100 baht per person
