The Night Market, called Suan Lum in Thai, is a market with lots of stuff for tourists and others just across the street from Lumpini Park. Though prices aren’t as good as you’ll find in some more local markets, it’s convenient and fun.
Quick Strategies:
- Come at night. It’s called the Night Market for a reason, as things don’t get started till about 6 p.m.
- Bargain. Some shops and stalls mark up goods substantially so don’t be shy about asking for a discount.
- Make sure it’s still there. The land has been sold to big developers and they’ve been threatening to close the Night Market any day now for years.
What to Buy:
The Night Market has lots of souvenirs, home decor items, jewelry, shoes and clothing. Head to the interior stalls to find hip, fun clothes from young Thai designers.
Bargaining:
If you're buying touristy items, you must bargain. For other items, you'll typically get a 5% to 10% discount just for asking.
Shipping:
There is a shop inside the main market that will package purchases and arrange shipping all over the globe.
Taking a Break:
There are a handful of restaurants in the Night Market but the most fun place to grab some food and a drink is the beer garden. There are about 30 different stalls selling mostly Thai food, a bunch of stalls selling different kinds of imported and Thai beer, and a stage in front that's usually got a local group singing and dancing on it (sit far away from the stage because it can be loud). You have to buy coupons from the main cashier first (don't worry, you can exchange the ones you don't use for cash when you're done) and use them to pay for your food.
Facilities:
There are bathrooms near the beer garden and ATMs near the main entrance.
How to Get There:
The Lumphini stop on the subway takes you right to the Night Market. When you leave, be careful about taking a taxi. Though there are scores of them lined up every night, they never want to use the meter and often ask exorbitant prices. Take the subway back or even walk a couple of blocks to find a fairer taxi driver.
Hours:
Shops start opening at around 6 p.m. and most stay open till about midnight. The best time to go is around dinner time.
