August is a quiet month for events and festivals in Thailand since Buddhist Lent (Khao Pansa) will continue through mid-October. Here’s what’s going on this month.

1. Hua Hin Regatta

This annual sailing event takes place in the beach resort town of Hua Hin, just a couple of hours by car from Bangkok. The races, organized by the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, can be viewed from Hua Hin Beach.

  • When: July 29 – August 2
  • Where: Hua Hin

2. Mother's Day and the Queen's Birthday

Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday is the day Thailand celebrates moms, too. Come to Sanam Luang in Bangkok for an alms-giving ceremony in the morning and musical performances in the evening, then take a stroll through the area near Dusit Palace. All the surrounding trees are decorated with enchanting twinkling lights.

  • When: August 12
  • Where: Bangkok and nationwide
