Foreigners don't often think of Isan when they're planning a trip to Thailand, but if you do happen to visit you'll find it an interesting and very friendly place. It's mostly rural farmland but there are plenty of small cities, too. And if you're interested in exploring some of Thailand's Khmer ruins, this is the place for you. You'll also find some of the best food in Thailand and, arguably, the nicest people in the country. Isan is poorer and less developed than Bangkok but there are still plenty of good hotels and even a handful of airports to fly into from the capital.
