Thailand's Awesome Elephants

Surin Elephant RoundupWe just got back from the Surin Elephant Roundup and had an excellent time! Not only did I get to do a roadtrip to rural Thailand but I also got to hang out with more elephants than I could count.

We headed out on Friday morning for a six hour drive to Surin in Isan.  Though the center of Surin Province is a city (also called Surin), most of the region is very rural and even the city itself is quite small. The tallest building is probably only five stories high! I love living in Bangkok but Thailand's small cities are such a nice break.

The Elephant Roundup was quite an event. We hadn't bothered to buy tickets in advance but when we arrived at the stadium on Saturday morning, we were told that the show was sold out. Luckily there were a few extra tickets that they released just as the show was starting. We took our seats and got to watch some traditional Thai dancing as well as some very cool elephant tricks.

NICE!! I’m headed to Thailand in December/January and you are giving me some very insightful ideas. I have no clue what to do in Thailand, even the beaches seem to be a very hard decision to choose from. Nice work, thanks!!!
